Coffee Storage

Properly storing and maintaining roasted coffee is vital to ensuring each cup is high-quality.

Coffee Storage Guidelines

The primary goal for ideal coffee storage is that it is kept away from:

Heat

Excessive heat accelerates the degassing process and can lead to the deterioration of coffee oils, impacting flavor. It's recommended to store coffee in a cool, stable environment. Avoid places like above the oven or near cooking areas where temperatures fluctuate.

Light

Light, especially direct sunlight, can degrade the quality of the coffee beans by causing chemical reactions. Storing coffee in an opaque container, as suggested, is ideal. If using a glass jar, it should be kept in a dark cupboard.

Moisture

Moisture is a major enemy of coffee freshness. It can lead to mold growth and rapid deterioration of flavor. A dry storage location is essential. Avoid areas prone to moisture, like under the sink or in the refrigerator. Contrary to common belief, refrigeration can introduce moisture and odors, which are detrimental to coffee quality.

Oxygen

Exposure to oxygen starts the oxidation process, which leads to stale coffee. An airtight container is crucial for minimizing exposure. Some containers on the market even feature one-way valves that allow carbon dioxide to escape while preventing oxygen from entering.

The best solution is to store coffee from opened bags in an airtight, opaque container away from direct sunlight or sources of heat.

Alternative solutions include:

  • Impulse Sealer: Using an impulse sealer to reseal bags is effective for preserving freshness, especially for those who don't have specialized containers. Ensure the seal is tight to minimize air exposure.
  • Rolling and Securing: Rolling down the bag and securing it with a clip or sticker is a common method. This technique is better than leaving the bag open but less effective than an airtight container.
  • Storing Upside Down: Storing the rolled-down bag upside down for a short period is a practical temporary solution. However, it is not recommended for long-term storage as it doesn’t provide a fully airtight seal.

Additional Tips:

  • Quantity: Purchase coffee in amounts that can be consumed within two to four weeks of roasting for optimal freshness.
  • Storage Location: Choose a consistent place for storage, away from fluctuating temperatures and humidity, such as a pantry or cabinet.
  • Avoiding Freezers: While some sources suggest freezing coffee for long-term storage, this can be risky due to potential moisture and flavor contamination. If freezing is necessary, ensure the coffee is in a completely airtight container and let it thaw at room temperature before brewing.
